About The Flesh Statue:

Langley, sick of his suburban life and sick of watching the man who raised him wither from the relentlessly ugly clutches of Alzheimer’s, moves to Long Beach with the hopes of finding more. What he finds is a group of poets with a message, a message they want to get out.

When Langley moves to Long Beach he instantly finds himself in a new world of poetry and graffiti. A world that is in the throws of destruction and in the need of revolution. Langley is forced to make the decision; does he stay in this new world with its collapsible revolution, or does he attempt to endure a life marred in the memory of his death mother and in the current state of his Grandfather.

The Flesh Statue follows Langley on this search for answers and along the way introduces us to an array of characters from the eratic Cinci who is trying to escape a troubled past, to Bert, a man who is willing to fight and burn for his ideals, to Latrail, a young woman taking on the role which Langley should himself be filling.

Q: Thank you for this interview, U.L.. Can you tell us what your latest book, The Flesh Statue, is all about?

A: Nineteen year old Langley Jackson leaves home while finding a way to cope with the impending death of his much loved grandfather. In this process he discovers social activism, poetry, graffiti and some other crazy stuff.

Q: Is this your first novel? If not, how has writing this novel different from writing your first?

A: This is my first novel. It is a second edition, however. The first edition is more for myself. This new version is for the public. It reads different. It’s shorter and more concise.

Q: How difficult was it writing your book? Did you ever experience writer’s block and, if so, what did you do?

A: No writer’s block here. The story was completely done by the time I started writing it. One of the greatest writing experiences I’ve had.

Q: How have your fans embraced your latest novel? Do you have any funny or unusual experiences to share?
A: I’m quite certain I don’t have fans. People like the story but I definitely wouldn’t call them fans. As a matter of fact I do have a few unusual experiences to share.

Q: What is your daily writing routine?

A: I write about 1,000 words in the evening and then edit in the morning and reread. I then get started that same evening with another 1,000 words. I might skip a day but that’s only because I’m promoting myself somehow.

Q: When you put the pen or mouse down, what do you do to relax?

A: Whiskey, read, red wine, movie, complain, stare at the ceiling, all kinds of stuff.

Q: What book changed your life?

A: Changed my life is a pretty big thought, though I remember thinking something profound somehow after and while reading Catcher in the Rye. Also I was definitely inspired by Slaughterhouse-five

Q: If someone were to write a book on your life, what would the title be?
A: It would simply be list of curse words.

Q: Finish this sentence: “The one thing that I wish people would understand about me is…”
A: a lot of times I don’t have time for what they think. So they need to just do what’s on their mind.

Thank you for this interview U.L. Harper. I wish you much success on your latest release, The Flesh Statue.
